Fourth Wing fans have been eagerly awaiting updates about The Empyrean book 4 since Onyx Storm‘s debut, and the upcoming sequel just took a massive step forward. On March 19, Rebecca Yarros revealed that she’s officially writing the next addition to her hit romantasy series. The news comes right after Yarros finished and submitted her new contemporary romance book.
The author took to Instagram to share the big news, posting a video of her writing “#4” on a whiteboard. The caption below reads, “And now, that my latest contemporary novel is off to my editor, I’m back writing in the Empyrean world for the foreseeable future. Let’s ride.”
If the goal is to stir excitement, the comments are proof of success. It’ll still be some time before we’re reunited with Violet Sorrengail and Xaden Riorson, but it’s good to see forward momentum on The Empyrean again. Yarros teased that she was starting index cards a few weeks ago on Instagram, so it was only a matter of time.
When The Empyrean Book 4 Could Come Out

With Yarros just getting started on the next Fourth Wing sequel, it’s hard to say when it could hit shelves — but it probably won’t release until mid- to late 2027 at the earliest. If the upcoming novel is as lengthy as its predecessors, it’ll be quite an undertaking. And even after Yarros finishes drafting, it’ll need to undergo edits before it’s ready to publish.
Yarros has spoken about how her chronic illness impacts her writing schedule, too, telling Elle that her 12- to 15-hour stints for Fourth Wing were “probably the most unhealthy process” for her to embrace. She has been vocal about adopting a more sustainable pace as the series continues. So, it’s possible the next book will take a bit longer. Even if it does, it’ll likely be worth the wait. And updates will give fans plenty to celebrate in the meantime.
